Durno Pottery Studio

The creative haven to perfect your pottery

About us

At Durno Pottery Studio we believe in creating art from the heart. Our aim is to make the studio accessible to as many people as possible so that everyone can learn how to create with clay.

Durno Pottery Studio, in the heart of Aberdeenshire, is a new venture and was set up in 2022. We established the studio with the idea of making it a community venture where people can come together, learn and create while making new friends.

We love teaching students how to produce pieces that are functional or decorative and do our best to help people connect with their creative side and to make something that they can be proud of.

Classes

Classes For Beginners

(NOT RUNNING

TILL FURTHER NOTICE)

4 week course

2.5hrs pw - £130pp

4 spaces

We have classes for beginners starting out on their clay journey. We keep our classes very small so people can get as much tuition as possible.

In our beginner's class we cover hand building, wheel throwing, surface decoration and glazing and firing. These classes are very relaxed and great fun.

An introduction to pinch, coil, slab and wheel work.

Includes 1 piece glazed and fired

 Mixed Taster Sessions

2 people - @2.5hrs - £195

4 people - @2.5hrs - £350

These sessions are ideal for people who are really interested in working with clay and want an experience of both hand building/slab work and wheel throwing. There will be 2 tutors present so while 1 person is on the wheel working their magic, the other will be creating a vase/cylinder/holder and then at half time, you'll switch places. Best of both worlds!

Includes 1 piece glazed and fired per person

1:1 Sessions With A Tutor

up to 2.5hrs - £110pp

One of the benefits of one-on-one sessions with a tutor is that you can make the most of personalized instruction. We offer 1:1 sessions for both hand building and wheel work.

1:1 sessions are for those interested in developing their skills in working with clay and either practicing or learning more advanced techniques of hand building, surface decoration, or wheel throwing.

Slab work session includes 1 piece glazed and fired.

Wheel throwing session - 5 balls of clay plus 1 piece glazed and fired.

GLAZING SESSIONS

@2hrs - £20pp

There is an optional glazing session organised after each Beginner's Class where people can glaze the rest of their pieces. There is a small charge for firing; usually about £5 in total and pieces can be picked up a few weeks later.

People who have been to a 1:1 session and want to keep more than the 1 piece included in the price of the session, have the option to glaze their pieces at this class.

Taster Sessions

Wheel Throwing or Hand Building

2 people - @2hrs - £150

Taster Sessions are fun and a great way to find out what you can do with clay. Discover just what you're able to make either in a hand building/slab work or wheel session. You'll be surprised at the results! Take a partner or a friend and have a bit of fun - and no we don't charge extra for taking a 'Ghost' video when you're on the wheel ;)

Includes 1 piece glazed and fired per person

Groups

Tutored Group

2.5hrs pw - 8 week term                                                                                £195pp

Anyone who has done a Beginner's Course and who wants to improve their skills can join a group with people at the same level so they can progress on their creative journey in clay together. It's a great way to make new friends and have fun at the same time.

We have 2 small groups of 5-6 beginners:-

Tuesday evening 7pm - 9.30pm

Wednesday morning 10am - 12.30pm - SPACES AVAILABLE

Monday evening 7pm - 9pm - SPACES AVAILABLE

Non-Tutored Group

3hrs pw - 8 week term                                                                                    £120pp

Pay-as-you-go per session                                                                                £18

This is a group for more experienced potters where they can meet, create and have a chat.

This group meets on a Friday morning 10am - 1pm where potters can enjoy time together doing what they love while having a chat and a cuppa. Clay can be bought at the studio at cost price or you can bring your own project to work on. We only use stoneware clay and fire to cone 06 bisque and cone 6 glaze fire, if you want us to fire your work. We have a range of glazes (dipping and brush on), underglazes, stains and coloured slips. Members also have the use of a wall mounted extruder and a slab roller as well as a range of small tools for slab work, sgraffito, throwing and trimming etc.

NB: THERE IS NO TUTOR PRESENT AT THIS CLASS

Workshops/Demos

Please keep a look out on our Facebook page

for announcements of any future workshops.

Disclaimer: Firing pottery is an unpredictable process and because pieces are taken to very high temperatures, they could crack or even explode during firing.  We can take no responsibility for damage to pieces during firing and cannot guarantee your creations will survive 100% of the time. However, we will obviously do everything we can to avoid damage to pieces.
